SKW Schwarz Rechtsanwälte (“SKW”) and the Research Center for Esports Law at the University of Augsburg (“FeSR”) concluded a cooperation agreement in March 2020 to support the positive development of esports.

The cooperation covers the areas of research, teaching and consulting on topics relevant to esports. An important part of the joint work is the exchange of information between science and practice. Among other things, the cooperation should result in joint publications, innovation projects and events (especially for teaching and consulting).
The FeSR is an independent institution of the Law Faculty of the University of Augsburg under the direction of Prof. Dr. Martin Maties. The aim of the institution is to conduct legal research in the field of esports. Furthermore, the FeSR sees itself as a contact for politics, ministries, associations and companies.
SKW Schwarz accompanies national and international clients in all legal questions of the esports sector. The law firm combines its many years of practical experience in the areas of information technology and media & entertainment in order to meet the special requirements of esports. The firm bundles its activities in consulting, academic literature and bringing together industry representatives in event formats in an interdisciplinary focus group for esports.
“Even though esports itself has been around for many years, this area is currently experiencing one of the most interesting developments of our days at the interface between sport and entertainment,” says Moritz Mehner, head of the esports focus group at SKW. “As a broad-based law firm with leading practices in the IT and media sectors, we are excellently positioned to support the legally compliant further development and further professionalization of esports. We are extremely pleased that we have found an extraordinary partner in the Research Center of the University of Augsburg.”
“Due to the structural peculiarities of the industry, numerous new questions arise in legal terms, but also many already known problems have to be fed into an adapted solution due to the special features”, says Prof. Dr. Martin Maties, Head of the Research Centre for Esports Law. “In order to be able to examine actual processes in a legally suitable manner, a constant exchange of information with the practice is required. In SKW Schwarz, we have an experienced partner here who not only advises in esports, but also bundles outstanding competence in all related matters.”
