New Inter-State Treaty on Media in force in Germany

The formal process leading to its entry into force had taken a while. Our report on the comments of the EU Commission and possible conflicts with EU law can be found here. However, since November 7, 2020, the New Inter-State Treaty on Media is now applicable law in Germany.

Besides traditional media such as broadcasting, the Inter-State Treaty on Media also addresses "gatekeepers", online platforms and new media such as search engines, language assistants, app stores, video sharing services, smart TVs or social media platforms.

The Inter-State Treaty on Media, including an explanatory statement and a supplementary protocol, can be downloaded e.g. here on the websites of the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate.
