The Firm

In a world that is moving ever faster, we stand for a constant that connects tradition with the future.

Tradition, because some of our offices are able to look back on decades of history. And because our longlasting client relationships demonstrate that we attach great importance to the principles of partnership and continuity.

The future, because today we are already working on tomorrow‘s relevant legal topics. Digitalisation has an impact on all businesses, and even classically conservative companies are obliged to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing market environment in order to remain competitive. Open innovation, intelligent devices, drone logistics and FinTechs are just a few of the topics that require the latest in forward-looking legal advice – which we are able to offer our clients thanks to our proximity to law faculties and future-oriented institutes.

One of our strong points is to provide rapid, successful and sustainable support by approaching legal problems proactively and with „visionary“ foresight from a legal point of view.

Panta rhei – Tomorrow‘s challenges for you are today‘s impulse for us. Everything is in motion.

Our Expertise

Today, any business activity may raise very complex and multi-dimensional legal issues. Generalists are not the right persons to deal with these problems.SKW Schwarz therefore provides the necessary specialists. At the same time our law firm is not labyrinthine.

To us, this represents “the best of both worlds”: On the one hand the breadth and depth of our specialist knowledge permits us to take on large assignments and find solutions for complex problems, on the other we can offer better personal contact with us than big law firms. This claim is borne out by the fact that, according to the German legal information service JUVE clients and competitors say about our lawyers that their practical knowledge is second to none, that they are competent and friendly and that working with them is very pleasant.

Since we just mentioned practical knowledge: SKW Schwarz lawyers know many sectors in depth. And they have learned about them from the inside, not from the outside. One of our firm’s particular traits is that many of our lawyers have indeed worked in the sectors which they advise now. That is a clear advantage: We can “translate” difficult legal issues into the “language” of our clients because we know the relevant backgrounds and procedures from our own experience.

Our advisory services

Legal competence and high quality should be givens in legal advice. Quite a number of law firms can truthfully claim that they meet these requirements. However, the fundamental approach of a law firm is another important aspect for the client. SKW Schwarz has one fundamental principle: We advise our clients on issues we know well from experience. We do not seek to keep our clients from acting or to raise objections. It is not enough to tell clients what they may not do or what is difficult to do. Our task is rather to prepare legally sound and economically adequate solutions which are easy to implement. We do not simply “resolve” legal questions, but put them in the context of our clients’ business goals.

Efficiency is evidently an important factor. Efficiency requires speed. Speed, however, cannot be the sole measure of the economic use of resources. What is crucial is how effective our solutions are in relation to the targets of our clients and the economic use of resources.

Of course there are cases in which we are asked for advice only after problems have emerged. That is a situation we can deal with, too. However, we prefer to advise our clients early on so that they are aware of potential legal problems and to show them potential solutions. We are good at doing that because we think ahead and systematically ask questions. We do not simply wait for the next assignment once we have completed one.

In our assignments we focus only on those aspects which are essential to the solution and offer our clients understandable added value. We do not give all our attention to minor problems, do not lose ourselves in theories and do not write long expert opinions which tell our clients nothing concrete at all. We do not leave our clients in the dark about what they should do in our opinion. Instead, we carefully weigh the pros and cons of different courses of action and then give a clear recommendation.

How we conduct our assignment

There is one key element which defines our relationship with our clients: Every client has a regular contact at the partner level. This partner is responsible for the client, both at SKW Schwarz and externally. His task is to resolve the client’s problems with the firm’s resources. And our clients can rely on that – any time.

Nothing is more detrimental to cooperation than having to explain a problem several times over just because you meet a different person each time you approach a firm. That is something which does not happen at SKW Schwarz. Our clients will not meet a new lawyer every time they contact us. Your personal contacts will always be available to deal with your questions. Of course they will ask lawyers from other departments for help if the assignment requires them to do so. They will do so with the express permission of the clients. Clients will never be sent from one lawyer to another within the firm without the involvement of their regular contact.

Due to SKW Schwarz’s structure the partners are closely involved with all assignments. We do not employ a host of associates whom we set to work on projects just to keep them occupied but without regard for practical considerations. Our teams are always as small as possible and as large as necessary in order to complete each assignment as quickly and as thoroughly as possible.

Our international presence

Many of our lawyers have studied or worked abroad and some of them are admitted to the bar in other countries. This international experience allows us to collaborate with partners around the world.

To us, being an international firm does not mean having numerous locations or offices around the world. For us, internationality is a way of describing our approach. Many of our clients do not limit their business activities to Germany. We make sure that their interests are represented efficiently wherever they need us to do so.

Our membership in the international law firm associations

and our cooperation with selected partner firms ensure that we can offer our clients the best possible advice around the world at any time. As central point of contact, we are responsible for coordinating the participating lawyers and law firms.
